Falls from chairs and recliners are one of the most common and preventable accidents in home care and facility settings — and they most often happen when a caregiver is in another room. The Smart Caregiver EC1-SYS Economy Chair Exit Alarm System addresses this directly with a simple, reliable solution: a weight-sensing pad placed on the chair seat sounds an audible alarm the moment the at-risk individual removes their weight from the pad and begins to stand, giving the caregiver time to respond before a fall occurs. Designed for home use and small facilities alike, the EC1-SYS comes pre-programmed, requires no setup beyond placing the pad and the monitor, and alerts with both an audible chime and a visible light — making it practical for caregivers who need a dependable, no-fuss fall prevention tool.

Who This Is For

  • Family caregivers managing a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer's, balance issues, or a history of chair falls who need an alert when the person attempts to stand unassisted
  • Home health aides who leave a patient seated in a chair while completing nearby tasks and need an audible alert if the patient tries to get up
  • Caregivers managing a post-surgical patient, stroke survivor, or anyone with weakness or instability who cannot safely stand from a chair without assistance
  • Small care facilities, adult day programs, and assisted living environments needing an affordable, easy-to-use chair monitoring solution without complex installation
  • Anyone who has experienced or is concerned about a loved one falling when attempting to rise from a chair unassisted — particularly at night or when the caregiver is in another room

Key Features

  • Weight-Sensing Chair Pad — Instant Alert When Pressure Is Removed: The 10" x 15" pressure-sensitive chair pad is placed on the seat of the chair. When the at-risk individual is seated, their weight keeps the pad activated and the system silent. The moment they shift their weight and begin to rise — removing pressure from the pad — the monitor immediately sounds the alarm. This trigger point at the beginning of the standing attempt is the most valuable moment for caregiver intervention, providing response time before the person is fully upright and at fall risk.
  • Audible Chime and Blinking Red Light Alert: The monitor sounds a repeated chime tone at an adjustable volume between 70–80 decibels and flashes a bright red indicator light simultaneously. The dual alert — audible and visual — ensures the caregiver is notified even in noisy environments or when they are at a distance. The blinking light is visible from a distance, allowing the caregiver to see the alert before they can hear it clearly.
  • Adjustable Volume — Low, Medium, High: Three volume settings allow the alert level to be calibrated to the care environment. Higher settings are appropriate when the monitor is placed in a separate room or when ambient noise is high. Lower settings reduce the intensity of the alarm for the person being monitored — particularly relevant for dementia patients who can become agitated or frightened by sudden loud alarms.
  • Auto-Reset — No Manual Resetting Required: When the person sits back down and pressure is reapplied to the pad, the monitor automatically resets and returns to monitoring mode. The caregiver does not need to manually reset the system after each alert — the system is immediately ready to alert again when needed. A manual reset button on the monitor face is also available to clear an alert if the caregiver arrives before the person sits back down.
  • Pre-Programmed — Ready to Use Out of the Box: The EC1-SYS arrives pre-programmed with no pairing, setup, or configuration required. Place the pad on the chair, place the monitor where it can be heard, insert batteries, and the system is operational. This is particularly important in home care settings where technical setup assistance is not available.
  • Status Light — Know When the System Is Active: A status indicator light on the monitor shows when the system is monitoring and when a pad is properly connected and active. Low battery notification alerts the caregiver before battery depletion causes the system to fail silently — a critical reliability feature for a safety device that must be operational at all times.
  • Nurse-Call Capability — 1/4" Port: The monitor includes a 1/4" nurse-call port for integration with existing nurse-call systems in facility settings, allowing the chair alarm to trigger the facility's central alert system rather than or in addition to the monitor's own alarm.
  • Vinyl-Covered Sensor Pad — Wipe-Clean and Incontinence-Resistant: The chair sensor pad has a vinyl protective cover that resists moisture from incontinence events and wipes clean with disinfectant wipes or antibacterial cleaner. Single-patient use is recommended to minimize infection risk. The pad should be replaced after one year of use or when the warranty period expires.
  • Battery or AC Power — Flexible Operation: The monitor operates on 3 C batteries (not included) for portable use or can be powered by the optional AC-04 power adapter (sold separately) for stationary placement where outlet access is available. Battery operation allows the monitor to be placed anywhere in the home without proximity to an outlet.

Placement Guide for Best Results

  • Chair pad placement: Place the pad flat on the chair seat surface. Ensure it is not pinched or folded by the chair cushion — the pad must lie completely flat to sense pressure correctly. Position it toward the center-rear of the seat where the person's weight is most consistently placed when seated upright.
  • Monitor placement: Place the monitor where it can be clearly heard from the areas where the caregiver works. In home settings, the kitchen, adjacent bedroom, or hallway are common positions. The monitor can also be mounted on a wall or door for fixed placement.
  • Volume setting: Start at medium volume and adjust based on how clearly the alert can be heard from the caregiver's typical location. For dementia patients who become distressed by the alarm, consider placing the monitor outside the room so the alert sound does not reach the patient directly.
