The Drive DeVilbiss CHAD® Oxymizer® Disposable Oxygen Conserver (Model P-224) is a clinically proven, non-electronic fluidic conserving nasal cannula designed for continuous high-flow oxygen therapy. Operating entirely without batteries, electronic switches, or complex digital controls, the Oxymizer® leverages a built-in mechanical breathing reservoir. This close-coupled 20 mL internal reservoir pouch captures and stores oxygen-enriched air during the exhalation phase. Upon the very first moment of inhalation, the stored bolus is discharged as a highly concentrated bolus alongside the continuous flow stream.

This specialized mechanic yields an outstanding 4:1 oxygen conservation savings ratio, slashing overall gas consumption by up to 75%. The P-224 Pendant model is specifically engineered for enhanced discretion and user comfort: the primary rectangular reservoir is situated lower on the chest, allowing it to be completely concealed underneath standard clothing. This design provides a lightweight, mask-free alternative that enables high-flow users to comfortably eat, drink, talk, and maintain an active lifestyle during treatment.

Design & Functional Features

  • 100% Battery-Free Fluidic Logic: Eliminates the maintenance anxieties, low-power failure states, and component weight associated with electronic conserving devices.
  • Concealable Pendant Profile: Places the primary oxygen storage chamber on the chest neck-loop rather than directly under the nose, offering a more discreet appearance than mustache-style alternatives.
  • High-Flow Delivery Capability: Safely accommodates continuous input flow rates up to 15 Liters Per Minute (LPM), making it highly effective for hard-to-saturate chronic respiratory users.
  • Universal Source Compatibility: Hooks up seamlessly to all standard continuous oxygen sources, including household oxygen concentrators, high-pressure compressed gas cylinders, and liquid oxygen systems.

Important Product Characteristics

  • Clinical Savings Application: Because it delivers a highly concentrated therapeutic bolus, a user can achieve the equivalent clinical saturation of a 7.5 LPM flow while running their oxygen concentrator at just a 5.0 LPM setting. This eliminates the need to double-up or chain two concentrators together for high-flow home use.
  • Hygiene & Replacement Lifecycle: As a sanitary disposable item, the P-224 cannot be washed or submerged in water. It is recommended to replace the entire unit every 3 weeks (or sooner if the soft nasal prongs become rigid or moisture accumulates inside the chest pouch).
  • Application Notice: The Oxymizer® must strictly be used under the supervision of a physician. Humidity bottles or active water humidifiers should not be inline with the conserver, as excess water vapor will condense inside the 20 mL chest reservoir pouch, causing the membrane to stick and rendering the conservation valve useless.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the mechanical difference between the P-224 (Pendant) and the F-224 (Mustache) style?

Both versions yield the exact same 4:1 oxygen savings ratio, but their physical shapes are completely different. The mustache style (F-224) positions the storage reservoir directly under your nose on your upper lip. The pendant style (P-224) moves the reservoir away from your face down to a weighted medallion piece sitting over your chest, making it significantly lighter on your nose and easy to hide under winter layers or casual shirts.

Can I clean the pendant reservoir pouch if moisture gets trapped inside?

No. The Oxymizer® is designed as a sealed, completely disposable item. Moisture from regular exhalation will gradually build up within the internal 20 mL space over time. You cannot open, flush, or clean out the interior lines. Once moisture bubbles begin to noticeably interfere with flow mechanics, discard the unit and unwrap a fresh replacement.

Why is my oxygen source alarming when I hook up the Oxymizer®?

This is almost always caused by an inline humidifier bottle. Humidifiers create excessive backpressure and moisture droplets that immediately block the microscopic fluidic ports inside the conserver lines. Ensure your oxygen lines bypass any water humidification cups completely before clipping into the P-224 line.

Does this device require an official prescription?

If you are listing this item as an individual product or part of an auxiliary pack, it technically falls under the umbrella of "Oxygen Accessories." While the conserving device itself does not require a complex medical prescription setup to purchase separately like a mechanical machine, users must use it strictly in accordance with the liter-per-minute parameters assigned by their primary physician.
