✓Clear the floors. Loose rugs, cords, clutter, and pets underfoot cause more falls than almost anything. Tape down or remove throw rugs.
✓Light the path. Most serious falls happen on the way to the bathroom at night. Motion-sensor nightlights along that route are cheap and effective.
✓Add a grab bar. People instinctively grab towel racks and soap dishes, which aren’t built to hold weight. A real grab bar by the toilet and in the shower fixes that.
✓Get a shower chair. Standing on a wet, slick surface is one of the riskiest things we ask an older body to do.
✓Review medications. Some prescriptions cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially in combination. A quick “brown bag” review with a pharmacist can flag the culprits.
✓Check the feet and the eyes. Well-fitting non-slip shoes (not socks, not loose slippers) and an up-to-date eyeglass prescription quietly prevent a lot of stumbles.
