A Non-Powered Air and Foam Mattress That Converts to Powered Low Air Loss
The Span America PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL is a 7-inch air and foam mattress that can be used two ways. On its own, it works as a non-powered reactive surface: head-to-foot air cylinders inside a foam shell sit beneath a Geo-Matt foam top whose individual cells follow the body’s contours. Add the 8410 control unit, now or later, and the same mattress becomes a powered surface with low-air-loss microclimate management, alternating pressure, lateral rotation and a powered float mode, selected with push buttons and connected with quick-connect air lines.
In low-air-loss mode, a non-collapsible Air Diffusion Matrix lets moisture vapor pass through the coverlet, where a continuous current of air carries it away. A tapered heel slope sits at the foot end, and a two-piece Safety Edge bolster runs along the sides. The mattress weighs about 34 lbs and is rated to 500 lbs in non-powered and alternating modes and 350 lbs in lateral rotation. It comes in 36 and 42-inch widths in 75 to 84-inch lengths, plus a recessed-deck version with V-shaped edges and a compressible section for multiple bed lengths, and versions made for Hill-Rom CareAssist beds. The mattress is sold without the control unit, which is available as an add-on.

Equipment Specialist Insight: The Convertible lets a facility or family buy the mattress first and add powered therapy only when it is needed: start non-powered, and add the 8410 control unit if the care plan changes. Check the weight limit for the mode the user will need: 500 lbs non-powered or in alternating pressure, 350 lbs in lateral rotation. Choose the size by the bed deck; the recessed-deck version fits frames where the mattress sits down inside the deck, and the CareAssist versions are made for Hill-Rom CareAssist beds. With the control unit, plug it directly into a wall outlet. A clinician should decide which mode suits the user.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with a control unit?
No. The mattress works on its own as a non-powered surface. The 8410 control unit is an add-on that converts it to powered low air loss, alternating pressure, lateral rotation and float.
Can I add the control unit later?
Yes. That is the idea behind the Convertible: start non-powered, and add the 8410 if care needs change.
What weight capacity does it have?
500 lbs non-powered and in alternating pressure, and 350 lbs in lateral rotation.
Which version fits my bed?
Choose a 36″ or 42″ width to match a standard deck, the recessed-deck version for frames where the mattress sits inside the deck, or the CareAssist version for Hill-Rom CareAssist beds.
Can I return it if it isn’t right?
No. For hygiene reasons this mattress system is final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded once it has shipped. Please check the size, weight rating and therapy placement before ordering, and ask us if you are unsure.
