A Powered Microclimate Mattress With 9-Inch Raised Sides and Alternating Pressure or Flotation
The Span America PressureGuard Protocol with Raised Perimeter is the raised-side version of the Protocol powered mattress system. It is 7 inches high in the center and rises to 9 inches along the sides, where the raised foam edges define the edge of the sleep surface. Air cylinders running head to foot sit inside a foam shell, under a Geo-Matt segmented top surface, and the control unit runs them in either alternating pressure, which shifts the load across the surface on a 10-minute cycle, or powered flotation. A Max Immersion setting gives an ultra-soft surface for users under 120 lbs, and a timed Auto Firm mode firms the surface for transfers, meals and daily care before returning to the selected therapy. Air also flows continuously through the coverlet’s inner layer to carry moisture vapor away from the surface.
The raised perimeter is built from contoured foam Safety Edge bolsters, and a tapered heel slope at the foot end is designed to shift load off the heels. The Air Diffusion Matrix coverlet has a fluid-proof, highly vapor-permeable outer layer that wipes clean with hospital-grade cleaners, or unzips for machine washing. The mattress holds its inflation during a power outage or while the bed is moved. Each system ships with the mattress, the 3400 control unit and the coverlet. It comes in 80 and 84-inch lengths, 35 or 42 inches wide; the 35-inch sizes are rated to 400 lbs and the 42-inch sizes to 500 lbs.

Equipment Specialist Insight: The raised sides are part of the foam mattress, not bed rails: they define the edge of the sleep surface but are not a substitute for rails or supervision where those are needed, and they add 2″ of height at the edges, so check how any bed rails sit against them. Match the size to the bed deck, and check the weight rating for the width: 35″ sizes are rated to 400 lbs and 42″ sizes to 500 lbs. The Protocol is designed to run powered; it holds its air through a short power cut or a move, but it is not meant to be used unplugged day to day. Hang the control unit on the footboard, connect the three air lines at the foot end, and plug it directly into a wall outlet. Use Auto Firm before transfers and meals. For users under 120 lbs, ask the clinician about the Max Immersion setting. A clinician should decide which mode suits the user.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included?
Each system includes the mattress in your chosen size, the 3400 control unit and the coverlet. A spare control unit is available as an add-on on this page.
How is it different from the standard Protocol?
It is the same powered mattress system, with foam sides raised to 9″ while the center stays at 7″. The raised sides define the edge of the sleep surface. They are not bed rails.
Can it be used without power?
It holds its inflation through a power cut or while the bed is moved, but it is designed to run powered. It is not meant for everyday use unplugged.
What weight capacity does each size have?
The 35″-wide sizes are rated to 400 lbs and the 42″-wide sizes to 500 lbs.
How do I clean the coverlet?
Wipe it in place with a hospital-grade cleaner, or unzip it, machine wash it and let it air dry.
Can I return it if it isn’t right?
No. For hygiene reasons this mattress system is final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded once it has shipped. Please check the size, weight rating and therapy placement before ordering, and ask us if you are unsure.
Please note: this item is final sale. For hygiene reasons, mattress systems cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded once they have shipped, and this includes mattresses that have been unpacked, set up or tried.
