A Raised-Perimeter APM2 Mattress With Alternating Pressure and Lateral Rotation
The Span America PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme is the raised-perimeter version of the APM2 powered mattress. On the 35-inch sizes it is 7 inches high in the center and rises to 9 inches along the sides, where raised foam wings define the edge of the sleep surface, with a lowered, padded opening for getting in and out of bed. Four head-to-foot air cylinders run beneath a Geo-Matt foam top of more than 800 articulating cells, and the Deluxe digital control unit runs them in one of two therapies, chosen with a recessed toggle switch: alternating pressure, in which cylinders 1 and 3 inflate while 2 and 4 deflate and then reverse on a 10-minute cycle, or lateral rotation, which turns the surface about 20° to each side. A Float mode gives continuous low-pressure support, and a 20-minute Auto Firm setting firms the surface for transfers and care before returning to the selected therapy.
The raised sides are built from Safety Edge bolsters, Shear Transfer Zone bands are built into the surface, and a tapered heel slope sits at the foot end. The stretch cover is fluid-resistant and wipes clean. The control unit has low-pressure and power-failure indicator lights with an audible alarm. The mattress weighs about 20 lbs, is rated to 350 lbs, and comes in 35-inch widths with 9-inch raised sides in 75, 80 and 84-inch lengths, plus 42-inch widths in 80 and 84-inch lengths. Each system ships with the mattress and the Deluxe digital control unit.

Equipment Specialist Insight: The raised sides are part of the foam mattress, not bed rails: they define the edge of the sleep surface but are not a substitute for rails or supervision where those are needed, and on the 35″ sizes they add 2″ of height at the edges, so check how any bed rails sit against them. Position the mattress so the entry opening is on the side the user gets in and out from. All sizes are rated to 350 lbs. Hang the control unit at the foot of the bed and plug it directly into a wall outlet. Use Auto Firm before transfers and repositioning. A clinician should decide whether alternating pressure or lateral rotation suits the user.

What is included?

Can I switch between alternating pressure and lateral rotation?
Yes. A recessed toggle switches between the two therapies. Float and Auto Firm are set on the digital control unit.
What does the raised perimeter do?
On the 35″ sizes, the foam sides rise to 9″ while the center stays at 7″, defining the edge of the sleep surface, with a lowered, padded opening for getting in and out of bed. The raised sides are not bed rails.
How is it different from the APM2 Deluxe?
It is the same APM2 air system and Deluxe digital control unit, with a raised perimeter and entry opening added on the 35″ sizes.
