An Alternating Pressure Air Mattress System Built Over a 3-Inch Foam Base
The Rhythm Healthcare SoftCaire EC is a powered alternating pressure mattress system that pairs air cells with a foam base. Seventeen individual 5-inch air cells sit over a 3-inch foam base, inflating and deflating in an A/B pattern on a 10-minute cycle. The mattress measures 80 inches long by 35.43 inches wide, is rated for users up to 350 lbs, and carries HCPCS code E0277.
A compact 5.5-pound pump runs on standard household power, with a dial that sets the pressure from 30 to 60 mmHg for the user’s weight. The head zone uses three static, fully inflated air cells for a steady pillow area. A CPR function at the head end deflates the mattress quickly and is designed for one-handed use, and a quick connector with a cap keeps the mattress inflated when it is disconnected from the pump, such as during a power outage or when the bed is moved. The cells are covered by a quilted nylon/PU cover with a zipper, and the mattress meets both the CA 117 and CFR 1632 flammability standards.

Equipment Specialist Insight: The SoftCaire EC replaces the existing mattress, so check that the bed deck fits an 80″ × 35.43″ mattress and that the side rails are tall enough above the mattress. Connect the tubes, set the pressure dial for the user’s weight and let the mattress inflate fully before the user lies on it. Keep the quick-connector cap nearby for power outages or moving the bed, and make sure caregivers know where the CPR release is at the head end. Compared with the SoftCaire Basic, the EC uses fewer, shallower air cells over a foam base rather than a full-depth air mattress, and its sheet does not list low air loss or a heel function. For users over 350 lbs, see the SoftCaire DX Bariatric.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the EC different from the SoftCaire Basic?
The EC has 17 air cells, 5″ deep, over a 3″ foam base, and alternating pressure. The Basic is a full air mattress with 20 cells, 8″ deep, and adds low air loss and a heel function.
How is the pressure set?
With the dial on the pump, from 30 to 60 mmHg, set to the user’s weight. The mattress alternates in an A/B pattern on a 10-minute cycle.
What happens during a power outage?
Close the quick connector with its cap, and the mattress stays inflated while it is disconnected from the pump.
What does the warranty cover?
An 18-month limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser. It does not cover misuse, improper handling, normal wear and tear, or non-durable components. The product carries a serial number label; removing it may void the warranty.
Can I return it if it isn’t right?
No. For hygiene reasons this mattress system is final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded once it has shipped. Please check the size, weight rating and therapy placement before ordering, and ask us if you are unsure.
