A Self-Configuring Powered Air and Foam Mattress With Immersion, Alternating Pressure and Lateral Rotation

The Span America PressureGuard APM-i is a 7-inch powered air-and-foam mattress whose 6200 control unit sets itself up for the person on it. When it is switched on, the unit runs a system check and then SmartImmerse enters Sense mode, filling and releasing air until the air profile matches the user; ready lights come on when it is done, and Sense can be pressed again at any time to recalibrate. A comfort control moves the surface one step firmer or softer from that setting.

Inside a foam shell, four air cylinders run head to foot beneath a high-immersion foam layer and a Geo-Matt segmented top of more than 800 cells. The 6200 offers three modes: Immersion, which keeps all four cylinders equally inflated and keeps adjusting as the user moves; Alternate, which changes loading across the surface on a 10-minute cycle, set by a toggle to either alternating pressure or lateral rotation of about 20°; and Auto Firm, which holds a firm surface for 20 minutes for transfers, daily care or CPR, then returns to the last mode. Safety Edge bolsters run along the sides and a tapered heel slope sits at the foot. The LifeSpan stretch cover has silicone-coated Shear Transfer Zone bands on the underside and is bacteriostatic, fluid-proof, flame-resistant and tear-resistant. The mattress weighs about 20 lbs, is rated to 350 lbs, and comes in 36 and 42-inch widths in 80 and 84-inch lengths, each with the 6200 control unit.

Need help with setup? White glove setup is available if needed. See our White Glove Setup Service.

Equipment Specialist Insight: Place the APM-i directly on a matching healthcare bed frame, never on top of another mattress, and match its length and width to the sleep deck rather than the outside of the frame. Hang the 6200 on the footboard, click the air lines into the unit and into the ports under the flap at the foot, and plug it into a grounded wall outlet. Let SmartImmerse finish its Sense step before adjusting comfort, and press Sense again if the user changes position significantly or the setup changes. Use Auto Firm before transfers and care. A clinician should decide whether alternating pressure or lateral rotation suits the user.
