1. The Personal Journey: You spent over seven years in direct, hands-on caregiving before founding GrandCare LLC. What inspired you to leap from being a dedicated caregiver to launching your own agency in Renton?

My journey began at the bedside, not behind a desk. For more than seven years, I cared for seniors and individuals living with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, behavioral health challenges, and other complex conditions. Those experiences taught me that every person deserves to age with dignity, respect, and compassion.

As I worked with different agencies, I saw opportunities to create something even more personal — an agency where clients are treated like family, caregivers are genuinely valued, and quality care is never compromised. That vision became GrandCare LLC. I wanted to build an agency that families can trust and one where caregivers feel supported and empowered to provide exceptional care.

2. Servant Leadership in Care: Whenever your team is short-staffed, you step back into the field yourself. How does that shape your agency?

I believe leadership begins with service. I would never ask my caregivers to do something I wouldn't do myself. If a client needs care and we're short-staffed, I gladly step in because our clients come first.

Working alongside my caregivers helps me understand their daily challenges and reminds them that they are never alone. It builds trust, strengthens teamwork, and creates a culture where everyone feels supported. Families also appreciate knowing the owner remains directly involved in delivering quality care.

3. Navigating Complex & Behavioral Care: What qualities do you look for when hiring caregivers?

Skills can be taught, but compassion, patience, integrity, and empathy come from the heart. We look for caregivers who genuinely enjoy serving others and who remain calm and respectful in difficult situations.

We provide ongoing training in dementia care, fall prevention, communication techniques, infection control, and person-centered care. We also emphasize listening carefully to each client's unique story so we can tailor our care to their individual needs and preferences.

4. Preserving Dignity & Independence: What does preserving dignity look like in everyday home care?

Preserving dignity means allowing clients to remain in control of their lives whenever possible. Instead of doing everything for them, we encourage them to participate in activities they can safely manage.

It means respecting their routines, listening to their preferences, knocking before entering a room, speaking respectfully, protecting their privacy, and recognizing that every client has lived a lifetime of experiences. Even small gestures of respect make a tremendous difference.

5. Connecting with the Renton Community: What are your goals as a member of the Renton Chamber of Commerce?

My goal is to build meaningful partnerships with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, social workers, physicians, senior living communities, and community organizations. Together we can ensure families know where to turn when they need trusted home care.

I also hope to educate the community about healthy aging, dementia awareness, fall prevention, and the many ways professional home care can help seniors remain safely at home.

6. Supporting Family Caregivers: What advice do you give family caregivers?

I remind families that asking for help isn't giving up — it's giving more. Caregiving is physically and emotionally demanding, and burnout affects both the caregiver and their loved one.

Professional caregivers can provide support while allowing family members to spend more meaningful, enjoyable time together. Accepting help is an act of love, not failure.

7. Building Trust with Families: How do you build trust from day one?

Trust begins with listening. We take time to understand each family's goals, concerns, and expectations before services begin.

One thing that makes GrandCare different is that we can arrange a virtual meeting between the family and the caregiver before services start. This allows families to meet the caregiver, ask questions, and feel comfortable with their choice. We also maintain open communication and respond quickly whenever families need us.

8. Overcoming Caregiver Burnout & Retention: How do you keep caregivers motivated?

I know what it's like to work long shifts because I've done it myself. I believe caregivers deserve appreciation, respect, encouragement, and opportunities to grow professionally.

At GrandCare, we foster teamwork, recognize outstanding performance, provide ongoing education, and maintain open communication. When caregivers feel respected and supported, they naturally provide better care for our clients.

9. The Heart of the Home: What does "home" mean to you?

Home is more than a place — it's where people feel safe, loved, comfortable, and connected to the memories they've built throughout their lives.

Helping someone remain in their own home while maintaining independence and dignity is one of the greatest privileges in caregiving. The greatest joy comes from seeing a client's smile, hearing a family express relief, and knowing we've made a meaningful difference in someone's life.

10. Home Care Essentials for Safety: What home safety essentials do you recommend?

Safety starts with prevention. I encourage families to have grab bars installed in bathrooms, non-slip mats, adequate lighting throughout the home, sturdy handrails, properly fitted mobility devices such as walkers or canes, medication organizers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and emergency contact information that's easy to access.

Just as important is removing tripping hazards, encouraging hydration and good nutrition, and creating a care plan that evolves with the senior's changing needs. Small changes today can prevent serious injuries tomorrow and help seniors continue living safely and confidently at home.
